Here it is a few weeks before the California gubernatorial election and I do not know how I will vote. Watching the debate a few weeks ago, the candidates stated the top three priorities for their administrations. Understanding their focus provides the contrast between them that will ultimately help me make my decision.
These priorities are, in fact, the projects they will undertake once in office. Whether you hold a political office, or are working in a business, your goals are your projects. Treating everything as a project helps move your ideas and goals forward, not only because you have a process to follow, but also a way to communicate to those involved. According to Scott Belsky, in Making Ideas Happen (recommended reading), projects can be broken into 3 parts: Action Items, Resources and Back Burner Items.
A priority of one candidate is to bring business back to California. Broad based action items could include:
creating a task force,
connecting with other successful states, such as Texas, to find out what they are doing to attract business and
engaging with current California businesses to understand what are the top 3 reasons they would remain in California.
Each of these tasks become their own projects and can be further broken down into Action Items, Resources and Back Burner Items.
Resources the administration could engage with are the California Chamber of Commerce, university business and economic departments, and business associations. Identifying resources at the beginning of a project brings a new layer of support early on.
Lastly, Back Burner Items would be any ideas or tasks that are not currently important, will not move the project forward at this time, but are valuable and worth exploring later on.
Approaching our ideas and goals as projects serves to communicate them more clearly and effectively, while laying a structure around them that moves them toward completion.
