I have to admit, I am a checklist junkie. I am sure that if I did not make checklists, I would leave half of my brain at home.
I remember when our family used to go camping, checklists were hugely important. If diapers or formula were forgotten, it was a long trek to the store.
In business, checklists can be a fabulous way to stay on top of things so that nothing falls through the cracks. A checklist is just like a process, only without the explanations.Think about where you can create checklists in your business or job:
New clients - contact and other information to gather from them; add them to your database, put in your follow-up system
Hiring Employees - forms to be completed, training, policies and procedures, list of interview questions
Marketing Checklists - for new products and services
Office Relocation - changing service providers, addresses, contact clients
Sales calls - marketing materials, examples of past work
Project Completion - when you finish a job, obtain feedback from clients, review what worked well and what didn't, schedule a follow up session.
Cold Calls - list the important points to cover
Presentations - what to bring: audio visuals, handouts, products for sale, feedback forms
End of Year - moving files to storage, preparing files for taxes, setting up files for the new year
People change jobs and miss days, don't rely on people to ensure everything is being handled, rely on a checklist.
Make that list - if it works for Santa, it will work for you too.
