MANAGE THOSE PROJECTS

When large or complicated projects come up, we sometimes feel overwhelmed, and then we get nothing done.  Here are some simple strategies to get a handle on them.

    1.    Think of all of the areas of your project and their related tasks.  Brainstorm with others in your business or group, or just yourself, putting one idea per post-it and place the post-its on a large sheet of easel paper taped (painters tape) to the wall.  All tasks should be written in the past tense, for example "website live, 11/15" or "training manual written, 11/10".

    2.     After all of the ideas are up, put dates on each post-it, starting with the LAST item that needs to be done.  Trust me, it is easier to put deadlines if you work backwards.  If your project needs to be completed by November 30th, you will have a post-it with "Project Completed 11/30".  Then, ask yourself which
tasks need to be done right before the project is complete, and then what needs to be done right before that, all the way back until you arrive at your project start date.

    3.    When all of the tasks and dates are up, you can categorize them according to what would work best for you and your group. Categories could be for example: Website Changes, Marketing, Training etc.  If only you are responsible for all of the tasks, then group the project board by month.  You have a clear picture of all the tasks that are due in October, November, etc.

Whenever tackling anything large, it always helps to break it down into simple steps.  This strategy can be used in all areas of your life.    Teach your kids how to do this when they have large school projects.  Apply it to projects outside of your business: when moving your home or business location,  preparing for a large Thanksgiving celebration, or creating a garden.

The key is .......  keep it simple!
