Article: "Stop Doing" List

Your "Stop Doing" List

This is the perfect time of year to take stock of what you have been doing throughout the year.

Ask yourself, what's working, what's not working, what's missing and what is not making a difference.  Answering these questions not only helps us create our goals and "to do" lists, it also helps us make a "stop doing" list.

Recently, I evaluated an organization that I had belonged to for 3 years.  Through this organization I developed many valuable personal relationships and not a lot of business.  As my business has changed over the last 3 years, this was not the place for me to be.

I resigned from the group the day before  my monthy Mastermind Meeting.  At the beginning of each meeting we go around the table and ask "what has changed since the last time we met?".  I considered how I would answer that question the following day.  While I had some very exciting developments to share, I also wanted to let everyone know that I had terminated my membership in this other organization.  For me, it was a big deal.  I thought the group may think it was odd that I chose to share that.

The morning of the Mastermind Meeting I was at the gym listening to Marshall Goldsmith's book What Got You Here, Won't Get You There on my ipod.   May lightening strike me if I am lying, but Goldsmith talked about acknowledging ourselves for what we have stopped doing, because that can hold as much value as what we have accomplished.  My Mastermind group loved this idea and two of the members actually left organizations they had belonged to.

What are you doing that no longer works? Do you belong to organizations that no longer meet your needs?  Do you have business relationships that don't serve you anymore?  Is there a marketing program that has run its course or a client that you need to fire?

To grow our business, we have to  be willing to embrace new ideas and relationships and, just as important,  be willing let them go.

What's on your STOP DOING 2011 list?

"We will open the book.  Its pages are blank.  We are going to put words on them ourselves.  The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day."
Edith Lovejoy Pierce
