WORK TO YOUR STRENGTHS
Last week, as I was walking out of Borders after teaching a class, I noticed a book by the entrance "GO Put Your Strengths to Work" by Marcus Buckingham. It looked very interesting, but I was in a rush to get home.
Later that night, when I replayed the Oprah Show from that day (yes, I am an Oprah junkie), the author, Mark Buckingham, was Oprah's guest. Hmmmm....coincidence? I don't think so. We have all heard "do what you love" to earn a living, but this author provides a series of steps to identify "what you love". Through his exercises, we learn to examine how we feel before, during and after the tasks or activities in our businesses. When we feel good and energized, these are our areas of strength. When our energy is sapped, we are pinpointing our weakness.
My twelve year old daughter has been taking piano lessons for the past 5 years. For the last 4 of them, she has been asking me to let her quit. After seeing Marcus Buckingham on the show I asked her how she felt before going to piano lessons, "Like I would rather get my homework done." was her response. What about during the lesson, "frustrated and bored," she replied. And how do you feel when the lesson is over, "tired and I want to go home." Clearly, I was not letting her put her strengths to work, but focusing on improving a weakness.
When we make the decision to become more productive in our businesses, we focus on our priorities and commit to managing our time better. When doing this, we can ask ourselves the question - which activities energize us and which ones exhaust us? This allows us to begin the process of moving the latter ones off of our plates. Who in our business can perform these tasks; who outside of our business can take them on? If you do not have employees to whom you can delegate, consider virtual assistants for database management and bookkeeping; marketing specialists for a focused marketing plan; and professional writers for your newsletters and ezines.
Today, take the first step. Choose 3 activities that deplete your energy and remove them from your responsibility list. Decide who will now be responsible and move these activities to their new owner. You will have more time and energy to put your strengths to work.
There will still be things that we "have" to do, but our time and energy will be more focused on our strengths. While I will not be letting my daughter skip math class for the rest of her education, I did let her end her piano career.
